SEI Courses

There's a great sense of self-esteem that kids and adults get when they learn a new skill like scuba. Like all exercise programs, snorkeling and scuba contribute to good mental and physical health. Scuba Educators International instructors don't just teach snorkeling and scuba; they teach character values, too, encouraging everyone to achieve his or her personal best. Instructors and volunteers set the example by modeling high moral standards during all courses and diving activities.

When caring scuba instructors create a safe and inclusive environment, like any other wholesome activity, scuba becomes a tool for personal development. Scuba Educators International programs achieve these goals. Scuba Educators International instructors promote good physical, mental, and spiritual health, which provides recreational diving opportunities and contributes to a better quality of life for all participants.

All courses include weights and belt if required.

Open Water Diver

Learning to scuba dive is safe and affordable, and requires a modest amount of training. An entry-level certification course takes approximately 32 hours to complete. Classes may take place during day or evening times, and take from a couple of weekends to several weeks to complete. In order to earn a scuba certification, you will participate in classroom sessions and practice essential diving skills in a pool. Finally, you will test your knowledge on a written exam and apply your skills during training dives in a lake, quarry, spring, or ocean. Upon completion, you will receive a certification card that identifies you as a trained diver, allowing you to rent scuba equipment, participate in advanced training, and explore diving destinations.

Prerequisites: 15 years of age or older (12-14 year old children may be certified as "junior divers"), complete medical questionnaire (with doctor approval upon request), and must demonstrate acceptable swimming skills.

Progress to SEI Leadership

SEI Diving Divemaster

This course is the first in the progression of leadership courses that leads to SEI Diving Instructor.

A certified SEI Diving Divemaster may provide on-site leadership for groups of certified divers during recreational scuba dives or for students during training under the supervision of a SEI Diving Instructor in accordance with SEI Diving standards. Divemasters may conduct the tour portion of the entry-level Open Water certification after the first dive and evaluation of skills has been completed by an Instructor. At no time may a Divemaster assume full responsibility for a scuba class.

The Divemaster course includes at least 38 hours of instruction involving classroom, pool and open water training. Any current SEI Diving Instructor can teach this program. The classroom portion includes staff lectures on Physics, Physiology, Diving Medical Aspects, Decompression Theory, Psychology of Stress, and many other topics. This material is at a level sufficient to provide knowledge for the students throughout the leadership program.

Certification renewal is required annually. Liability insurance for Divemasters working with an Instructor is recommended and is required when working alone.

$325/Candidate Includes all necessary materials for classroom, pool, open water.

Student will be responsible for purchase of an SEI standards manual.

Download the leadership prep manual. This manual contains additional information on prerequisites, completion requirements and an Academic Study Guide.

SEI Diving Assistant Instructor

Assistant Instructor certification is the second required step in the development toward becoming a SEI Diving Instructor.

Assistant Instructor certification is a required step in becoming a SEI Diving Instructor. Assistant Instructors may teach the SEI Diving Snorkeling for Families Course. During the open Water Diver course, Assistant Instructors may be used in all aspects of classroom and pool or confined water training under the supervision of a SEI Diving Instructor. However, an Instructor must evaluate all skills. During open water training for Open Water Diver, the Assistant Instructor may conduct tours only after all skill evaluation and the first dive has been completed by the Instructor. The emphasis of the Assistant Instructor program is to show the participants how and what to teach once they become an Instructor.

The Assistant Instructor course requires at least 23 hours. Certification renewal is required annually and liability insurance for Assistant Instructors is recommended but not required.

$325/Candidate Includes all necessary materials for classroom, pool, open water.

Student will be responsible for purchase of an SEI standards manual.

Download the leadership prep manual. This manual contains additional information on prerequisites, completion requirements and an Academic Study Guide.

SEI Diving SCUBA Instructor

This program is designed as the final phase of instruction in the SEI Scuba leadership series.

Instructor certification permits an individual to teach and certify scuba students. The Instructor must always promote safe diving and uphold the standards of SEI Diving. The Instructor should also develop scuba leadership for SEI Diving by instructing Divemasters, Assistant Instructors and assisting in programs for new Instructors.

The certification Institute for Instructors includes at least 35 to 40 hours of classroom, pool and open water time. Certification renewal and proof of insurance is required annually.

Price: TBD
